The body is intelligent, smarter than we will ever be and self healing. Learning to help the body is about learning to speak its language- not about dominance. If the body is not able to recover, it most definitely isn’t lazy or dumb and it is very willing to show you and guide you to what it needs- if you are willing to listen.
Everything moves to one degree or another. Find out what isn’t moving enough and help it back to its normal movement potential and dysfunction usually resolves.
Always ask yourself why.
Pain is the canary in the coal mine. You listen to the canary to discover a problem is happening in the system but you don’t assume it is coming from the canary or where the canary is sitting. Most often the pain is the end of a chain of problems and where the body couldn’t compensate or adapt any longer, not the source. Myopically focusing on the point of pain leads to a lot of frustration for everyone.
Muscles and even joints are rarely the problem. Muscles are the most adaptable tissue in the body. They lengthen, shorten, get stronger or weaker based on the current use and needs. They responsive. If there is pain in a muscle- I am always looking for some other source. Why? Often it is the connective tissue that is restricted causing problems. Electrochemical gradients that need to be disrupted to allow normal physiological function to resume. This is why programs based on exercises and stretching only give temporary even or no relief.
The body knows that organs are more important than muscles or joints. They will sacrifice these non essential parts to protect the essential. If an organ is stuck the entire alignment of the body will be sacrificed. And this is uncomfortable and even painful. (Think Back Pain) But it is protective. Find out what the body is trying to protect- release the organ, nerve, dural lining… and the problem resolves. If you are wondering why you have to see the chiropractor 2x a week for years? It’s treating symptoms not the root cause. The body is still trying to protect you by misalignment.
You can’t beat neurology! If the brain is turning off a muscle to protect an organ or other important part, exercising it will not bring it back online. You need to find why. Often releasing the right organ and realigning the structures will immediately bring the muscle back to strength. Then add neuro-re-education training exercises to reintegrate the neurology.
